Saptaswara - Seven shades of celebration

There are some colours that seem to belong to celebration.

The deep green of a silk saree pulled out for a wedding.
The blue of a peacock feather glimpsed during a temple procession.
The red saved for a special occasion.
The purple and magenta of an evening spent dressing slowly, while someone in the next room is looking for their earrings.

And then there is music.

The seven swaras — Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni — are among the simplest things we learn, and yet from those seven notes comes an extraordinary universe of music.

We imagined these sarees in much the same way.

Seven colours. Seven moods. Seven little notes of celebration.

Each saree carries a swara and a name drawn from the world around it — Ponnoli, Mayil, Madhumalti, Nila, Senthamarai, Madhavi and Vennila.

Some evoke flowers. Some moonlight. Some the richness of the natural world. All of them carry a little of that familiar, difficult-to-describe feeling of dressing up for something special.

Because festive dressing needn't always be about extravagance.

Sometimes it is the rustle of a saree being unfolded.
The glint of zari under a yellow light.
A mother helping her daughter pin her pallu.
Jasmine tucked into freshly washed hair.
The first note of music drifting in from another room.

Saptaswara is our little celebration of those moments.
